Pros:

  • Recording and hosting make a lecture reusable.
  • Recording tends to increase the quality of a lecture.
Cons:
  • There are costs for recording and hosting.
    • Costs depend on the quality.
      • Universities often reduce costs by using stationary and unoperated cameras, and little or no post-processing. The disadvantage of such videos is that they look boring.
Connected patterns: Alternative Patterns: Hosting Options:
  • VideoHostingProvider?
  • VideoStreamingProvider?
  • VideoHostingAtUniversities?
  • VideoHostingServer?
  • VideoStreamingServer?
Statements:
  • A reasonably compressed video lecture may need 100-200 MB of video storage space per hour of lecture. (compare this to the 2-3 GB of a standard quality DVD movie)
  • Most video hosting platforms (like youtube) won't accept to host lectures because of their length = high storage requirements. Maybe also because of their typical lack of attractiveness. Situation may change.
  • You typical can't use a normal webspace to disseminate videos for a number of reasons. E. g. videos put a high load on the server, so low-cost-webspace-providers must exclude this usage in some way.
