Intervention at the GreenWorldForum Vienna 2012

What is the context:

We will have fora on the decisive factors that shape our green future: climate, energy, education, mobility, politics, looking at the developing fields of green business and technology, the social and institutional factors, the position of human rights and the treatment of scarce resources like water, will look at ecocities, the lessons from Fukushima, and end up with social innovation versus political failures, before we look at the critical role of information that has indeed a prominent place in this conference. The keynote will be "How the Facebook generation has the power to stop the exploitation of our planet" and it will be complemented by my Intervention "Ubiquitous Intelligence - how information changes the face of the planet" outlined here. This will be followed by a panel on the role of Media.

What is the thoughtline:

  • Embedding Information in things means to create artefacts that can react autonomously and immediately to a range of events and (more or less) unforeseeable conditions. While there is a long history of "intelligent" artefacts that "react" to the flow of time, environmental conditions, internal states, starting from Herons opening temple doors dating back more than 100 years before Christ to James Watts Governor on the Steam Engine, the practical needs of warfare have brought a revolution in Cybernetics in the 1940s. [1]
  • Cybernetics was an outcome of Wold War 2 and a direct reaction to technological limits of Human driven air defence systems. Means a tipping point is reached. Norbert Wiener foresaw the consequences of industrial automation.
  • The second Cybernetic revolution comes with the advent of the mobile technology. Industrial automation is followed by ubiquitous automation.
