|place for findings in the web relating to Urbanity and small towns:
In the search for new forms of urbanity the influence of media technologies on the perception of and on the engagement with social constructed spaces becomes evident. Under the conditions of telecommunication, digital networks, distributed production systems, global financial markets the traditional concept of city as a spatial, temporal and political defined place cannot be any longer circumscribed within the dimension of the local.
The concept of urbanity, of the characteristically citified view of life, referred originally to the view of the world from Rome, and the popes who took Urbanus for a pontifical name were expressing their solidarity with the city they ruled as Bishop of Rome. The converse of Urbanus is Rusticus. Urbane bears a relationship to urban similar to the relationship humane bears to human, the OED notes.
As the encyclopedic defines "urbanity" as the exact oposite of "rurality" it seems one can not use the two terms in combination. But I say we have to overcome this "oposition"! How shall we cope with this challenge?
