"Yesterday I had a very intersting talk with Anton (based in Odernheim am Glan) who is a real visionary of a new Europe and who is doing groundbreaking work in Wester Romania by identifying a mountain area in the "Muntii Apuseni", the Transsilvanian Western Kapathes near Cluj.

Anton and his friends have identified a village in which they would like to showcase the potential of another, wholistic development path, based on the intense and immense cooperation of man and nature, on true old crafts, wisdom and experience, mixed with the best of modern technology. They call this a "holotope" and they are working with the locals since years to get their consent and cooperation towards this development path.

On the 29th of May we are planning to have a special evening in Karolinenhof to invite all friends of the holotope for a "symposion" (eating, listening, talking) on the holotope and its development and establish a "global" community of support.

One of the ideas that came across in our discussion is the marrige between old ways of farming with horses with new and sophisticated technologies that mitigate some of the traditional weaknesses. Anton put my attention on the fact that before the arrival of the tractor and oil based agricultural machines there were already very sophisticated ideas and technologies that multiplied the capacities of the horse. How much more could we do today! I find it fascinating to think of technology that enables and protects our animals instead of simply removing them from the process and the scene.

So Anton will come with a group of Romanians to Austria around the 24th of April (very soon) to confront them with old farmers experiences and such tools. Then the Acadamy of wholistic cultures will do another study tour to the Apusian area, and later on results will be presented in our symposion in May

So:

2. If you know some really really good old farmers who have still a grip of these "ancient" technologies pleae get in touch with Anton

3. If you are fascinated by the idea of working on a marriage between flexible automation and animals, please be informed that here a totally alternative domain might open up to the mechanistic villages we nevertheless also appreciate.

Just in short:
Re-Using horsesis a very common idea amongst permas and oldstyle organic farmers. There is even a jounal for ...horse-farming;
trainings are offered regularily;
and in forestry even Österr Bundesforste are using horses in difficult areas.
Formal trainigs are institutionalized.

Seit einiger Zeit geht man ja ganz gezielt in der Forstwirtschaft auf den Einsatz von Pferde für die Holzrückung um der Bodenverdichtung im Wald durch Monstertrucks entgegenzuwirken. Hier muss ich als Nachbar zum Dunkelsteinerwald allerdings mit Entsetzen feststellen dass zur Holzbringung per LKW die Forstwege exzessiv zu Highways im Wald ausgebaut werden.

Nachdem ich ein Pferd habe, mit dem ich „Holzrücken und Felder bestellen“ übe und zuhause am Hof und im Wald häufiger praktiziert habe, interessiere mich sehr für den Ansatz. Es gibt doch einige Vor- und Nachteile und in Deutschland wird viel darüber diskutiert ob es eher ein „Liebhaberhobby“ ist oder in der heutigen Zeit einen tatsächlichen gesellschaftlichen Wert besitzt. Vor allem in der Forstwirtschaft (auch in der österreischichen!) spricht noch vieles für die Vierbeiner, vor allem in unwegsamem Gelände.

In Serbien hatte ich 2002 die Möglichkeit 2 Wochen bei einem „Real-life-workshop“ im Gebiet des Tara-National-Parks mit den wirklichen Locals und ihren Tieren zu arbeiten und habe dort viel Erstaunliches erlebt und gelernt. Etwas technological support würde ihnen dort vieles erleichtern. Sie arbeiten heute noch mit Geräten von vor 100 Jahren.

In Osttirol gibt es noch viel Wissen zum Arbeiten mit dem Pferd. Ich selbst habe in meiner Kindheit mit unserem braven "Spiegel" die Felder geeggt und mit dem Pferd meiner Schwester Heu eingeführt.

Mein Vater hat Zeit seines Lebens Holz gearbeitet mit Pferden. Das große Problem heute ist, dass weder die Bauern noch die Pferde an diese Arbeiten gewöhnt sind. Vielleicht hat sich auch die Einstellung geändert, dass man Mensch und Tier von den großen Belastungen befreit, durch den Einsatz der Technik.

Die Arbeit selbst im Tempo eines Pferdes ist allerdings "menschenwürdiger"
