Original Message From: apc.forum-bounces@lists.apc.org On Behalf Of Anna Feldman Sent: Monday, November 16, 2009 5:21 AM To: A general information sharing space for the APC Community. Subject: [APC Forum] Willetts' lecture on 'Who Really Created the Internet'now onlinehttp://www.city.ac.uk/whatson/2009/10_oct/291009_Peter_Willetts.html Peter Willetts' lecture of a couple of weeks ago on the origins of the internet is now available to view online. Professor Willets makes a very well argued case that the modern public internet is not a child of the US military, but rather the work of NGOs and activists during the 80s, that later came together to form the APC. He goes on to speak about the consequences of that history on the internet that we all depend on today. Well worth taking some time out to watch - especially as the work of many on this list are referenced in the lecture. Reconnecting with our organisational ancestry certainly gave those of us from GreenNet who went to hear him, a rosy glow of pride :).....I recommend skipping the introductory guff and starting at 3'30'' ( Anna Feldman)
For a really neat application concerning Internet users by country go to http://datafinder.worldbank.org/internet-users If you go to Google and put "Internet users in (your country of choice)" into the search bar you will get the information graphed by year! Interessant dass Österreich schon lang hinter Deutschland liegt.
