The purpose of the Irish Monks and Nuns was not primarily to missionize Europe, but rather be in extended service to their own culture. They called their pilgrimage the "green martyrdom".
See the difference between Irish Columban and Anglo Saxon Bonifatius. The latter cut the Donar - Oak in Fritzlar. I dont think the Irish would have appreciated such a hostile attititude towards traditional cults, they worked more subtly (athough Gallus threw a statue into the water) can anybody help me with research?
