Introduction to the Workshop

Seit jeher sind Städte und Gemeinden Orte einer aktiven Kulturproduktion.

Cities and Communities have always been a place of active creation of culture.

Globale Kulturtrends treffen Städte, Regionen und Gemeinden ebenso unvermittelt wie die wirtschaftliche Globalisierung und die Krise des sozialen Sicherungssystems. Daher ist es wichtig, daß sich Kommunen, Vereine und Kulturschaffende auf die sie zukommenden Aufgaben vorbereiten und durch vernetzte Kooperation neuartige Wege beschreiten.

This role is deeply affected by Globalisation of cultural trends, which challenge cities and regions in the same extent as economic Globalisationn and the crisis of the social welfare system. Therefore it is of utmost importance that Communities, associations and culture creators face this challenge and find new ways of cooperation and networking

Moderne Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien zählen zu den zentralen kulturellen Prägungen unserer Zeit. Nicht immer kann von kulturstiftenden Technologien im positiven Sinne gesprochen werden. Stehen unsere Städte und der ländlicher Raum vor dem endgültigen Bedeutungsverlust in der Totalität von Vereinzelung und Globalisierung oder gelingt es, eine Allianz in der gemeinsamen Kulturarbeit zu finden?

Modern ICT are amongst the most influental cultural phenomena of our time. But not allways the result of their use can be called culture. Rather they might even have a detremental effect on culture. They produce individualisation and globalisation alike, which diminuishes the cultural glue in our towns, cities, rural areas. Is there a possibility of new local alliances strengthening the re-emergence of local cultures in the midst of cyberspace?

Wenn der Inhalt der multimedialen Technologien nicht auf die Kommunikationsnotwendigkeiten und -gelegenheiten der Menschen in Kleinstadt, Dorf und Region Bezug nimmt, dann werden nur wenige Anschluß an den globalen Raum finden, während ein zunehmender Teil der Bevölkerung durch die Fülle von Entertainment, Infotainment und Edutainment in gesellschaftliche Apathie verfällt.

If the content of Multimedia is not based on the communicational neccesities and opportunities of people in small towns, villages and regions, only a few will actively connect to global opportunities, while the rest of population will be drawn into social apathy by a plethora of Entertainment, Infotainment and even Edutainment.

Wie gelingt es Städten, Regionen und kleinen Gemeinden handlungsfähig zu bleiben und aktiv auf globale Megatrends einzugehen? Welchen Einfluß hat vernetzte Kulturarbeit im ländlichen Bereich auf die Kulturarbeit und das kulturelle Selbstverständnis der Städte?

How can cities, regions and small communities maintain their capacities and abilities to act and respond adaequately to global megatrends? What is the relation between cultural networking in rural areas and the cultural identity of cities?

Welche Möglichkeiten der angepassten Kulturarbeit in Städten, Regionen und Verwaltungen gibt es, um gemeinsam Städte und Gemeinden zu aktiven und lebenswerten Orten zu entwickeln, sodass reichhaltige kulturelle Schätze nicht ungenutzt in Archiven verstauben oder anderswo ausgebeutet werden?

What are the appropriate possibilities for cultural initiatives in cities, regions and local governments to co-develop cities and smaller communities to active and inhabitable worthwhile spaces? What can help them to bring their cultural heritage to bloom, not having it dumped and dusted in archives or skillfully exploited elsewhere

Der Workshop versucht gemeinsam Antworten auf aktuelle Fragen in der vernetzten Kulturarbeit zu entwickeln. Gedankliche Barrieren und scheinbare Wiedersprüche (Tradition vs. Fortschritt, lokale Kultur vs. globale Kultur) sollen überwunden werden. Um möglichst vielschichtig diskutieren zu können und erfahrene Akteure zu Wort kommen zu lassen, sind für den Nachmittag parallele Arbeitsgruppen geplant.

The Workshop is meant to develop answers to these and more associated and current questions of cultural networking. The aim is to overcome mental barriers and apparent contradictions (Tradition versus Progress, local versus global). The discussion will be held on various topics in afternoon worksgroup sessions to bring in many facets and experiences of various actors.

Zu diesem Workshop laden die Stadt Coburg und City & Bits aus Berlin. Beide haben sich mit sechs anderen europäischen Partnern im Projekt „ERDE“ (European Rural Development by means of Education/IT) zusammengeschlossen.

The invitation to this workshop is issued by the city af Coburg and the company "City & Bits" from Berlin.. Both have teamed up with six other European partners, forming the ERDE (European Rural Development by means of Education/IT) consortium.

Diese Lernpartnerschaft im EU-Programm GRUNDTVIG ermöglicht uns, gemeinsam mit innovativen Institutionen aus anderen Ländern Europas, die Rolle der neuen Medien in der Sicherung umfassender regionaler, ländlicher Entwicklung zu untersuchen und neue Modelle zu erarbeiten. Dabei spielen innovative Wege der Zusammenarbeit von Städten und ländlichen Räumen eine wichtige Rolle.

This learning partnership in the EU - program GRUNDTVIG is enabling us to work together with some of the most innovativbe and experienced institutions in Europe in looking closer at the role new media can possibly play in supporting wide-ranging rural and regional development and find new models. One of the most important strategic axes is the discovery of innovative ways cities and rural areas can work together."
